Built
in 1848-49, the Old Courthouse was the centre of political, cultural
and social life in St. Catharines. Designed by renowned architect Kivas
Tully, it was hailed as a great architectural achievement. The existing
building soon became too small and an addition was the added in 1863-65.
The building was used for municipal purposes, housing council chambers,
a meeting hall, courthouse, offices, the police station and fire hall.
During the late 19th Century the first floor contained stalls for the
Downtown Market located next door. The meat market was located in the
basement and was marked by a cow's head and sheaf of wheat carved into
the stonework, which can be seen above the door on James Street.
The
Old Courthouse became the centre for culture and entertainment, often
accommodating performances of the most popular concerts and plays of
the day. It is considered one of St. Catharines' most significant historical
sites. The building was decommissioned as a Courthouse in 1981.
